Radio News Stories Review

Radio News Production Review –

When starting the radio news production section, I was tasked with finding five different news stories which I could report on. I had to choose ones that would be interesting for people to listen too. I had to find out the 5 W’s of the stories which are Who, What, When, Where and Why and also make sure they were clear, concise and correct. Out of these stories I would then go on to choose three of them to go into detail on and then finally record and edit using Reaper.
In the end I chose to report on College Parking, The Berlin Trip and Applying for University. These ended up being good stories to choose as I was able to interview people from the college which of course then fit in with my target audience as they would be interested in listening to a story of this kind.

When recording a lot of my stories, I made sure to be in a quiet spot where there would be no interruptions or disturbances, however I also wanted my stories to have a more real edge to them, so in some of the recordings you can hear background noise such as the chatter of the classroom I was in. There were times when I didn’t like the way my voice sounded, or I thought there was a mistake in the way one of my interviewees told their stories, so to make it seem more professional I kept on recording until I got it the way I wanted.
When listening to example news stories it was obvious to me that I needed my own stories to flow without any silences or editing gaps as this sounds unprofessional.

In order to gather information on what people thought of my news stories I created a survey and asked people to fill it in for me stating different things about my work.
The first question I asked was whether or not people felt that my work was relevant to the target audience. The responses for this were good as everyone that answered the survey said yes, they were. I then asked how informative people thought my stories were, and again was impressed with the result as the answers all came back positive, with people saying they were very Informative and Informative.
I found that the best thing I could have done to improve my news stories was to ask more direct questions instead of letting people tell their own stories in all three of my news pieces. On asking people if there was anything they wanted to find out in my stories, the answers mostly came back as “No”, showing that my stories were informative enough. There was one comment which said that I could’ve got more comments off of college staff as a more professional view which is something I can now work on in the future.

I do think when editing my news stories there is a major change I should have made, this is the actual volume of my recordings. When listening to them the sound is inconsistent, with some of the piece being at a good volume level, and then the next piece being quite loud and uncomfortable to listen too. If I was to remake my news stories I would definitely take this into account and make sure the volume levels were kept at similar to give them a more professional finish.

Also, some people may think that the stories are a little too long and this could make people get bored. Looking back I feel that this is because when writing my stories out in a draft I wanted to get as much information as I could into them to make sure they gave listeners the relevant information. In the future if I have to create news stories similar to these again, I would try and keep them to the 30 second limit.

Overall I think that my stories worked well for my target audience and I was able to get a lot of interviews with relevant people arranged and recorded to make my stories more interesting. There are parts where I feel I could have improved although for my first attempt at creating news stories I feel like they’re informative enough and the kind of stories that you would be interested in listening too.
